Paris Hilton, an American socialite and heiress, settled her lawsuit against Hallmark because of their manufactured greeting card that featured Paris’ image with her catchphrase, ‘That’s Hot!’
The famous personality claims that the greeting cards manufacturer had based that scene from her reality show entitled, “The Simple Life”. The image caption says, “Paris’s First Day as a Waitress.”
With the pun made on her catchphrase, Hilton sued the bosses on the Hallmark firm, stating that they had violated her publicity rights.
A week ago, attorneys from both parties had told the California judge that they had already reached a settlement. The exact details about the agreement were not released due to the confidentiality provision; however, many believe that Hilton’s party had received a favorable package.
The hotel heiress filed the lawsuit against the company last 2007, and Hallmark replied with a free-speech defense. In fact, the case was brought up until the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals that gave Hilton a big legal victory just last year.
The court of appeals rejected the greeting cards company’s protected-speech dispute. The case was then brought back to the lower court.
Everyone was expecting Hilton to fight the case against Hallmark in court up until December. However, their lawyer’s announcement last week had suggested the settlement of the case.
In 2007, Hilton had served a sentence in the Los Angeles County jail as a result of numerous legal incidents. Also, a week before the news about the settlement, Hilton was refused by Japan’s immigration officials to enter the country because of her summer police arrests with drug charges.
