The new top computer built in China is powered by over 7,000 Nvidia graphic processor units. The new supercomputer is considered as the world’s fastest computer created to date.

The supercomputer was built by the National University of Defense Technology located at the National Supercomputing Center in Tianjin, China. According to Nvidia officials, it has a horsepower equivalent to about 175,000 laptop computers.

This top computer is called Tianhe-1A, which is thought to be used currently by several scientists across different fields and will be made available in some other countries.

Nvidia is well known for creating plug-in video cards found in high-end gamer computer. However, they are now promoting their technology that it may be used for other purposes apart from graphics. This includes supercomputer’s running simulations in astrophysics, as well as other math-heavy tasks.

The supercomputer is also expected to be used in medical imaging, weather forecasting, as well as oil exploration.

The graphic processors, also called GPUs, do well in performing several small calculations at the same time. This makes them useful for several kinds of tasks. The graphic chips used in the Tianhe-1a are high-end cards that can be sold at about $2,500 each.

According to Nvidia, seven of the world’s most powerful computers are found in the United States, with two of them in China and one in Germany.

Some experts think that most programmers and semiconductor players focus on central processors. However, they believe that GPUs should be utilized more to improve the performance of everyday computers, which include desktops, PCs and tablets.
