During a preliminary ruling, a federal judge said that bracelets that say “I (heart) boobies!” are not vulgar and should not be barred by school officials who think they are inappropriate. The bracelets are sold to raise funds in support of breast cancer.
The ruling went for two Easton girls who were suspended after wearing the “boobies” bracelet after they had been banned in their middle school. The girls wore the bracelet during their school’s Breast Cancer Awareness Day.
Judge Mary McLaughlin mentioned in the ruling she issued Tuesday that the bracelets may raise awareness about breast cancer and potentially decrease the stigma associated with breast health discussion. Moreover, she wrote in her ruling that the school district were not able to show that the bracelets could cause a disruption in the school.
School officials from Easton insisted that the slogan have sexual double meaning and has pushed two male students from their school touch some girls inappropriately. Easton officials are clearly upset over the ruling as they find it disturbing that the judge could not see what they saw in the slogan.
Easton is only one of the couple schools that have banned the bracelet within school premises because of its supposed sexual implication. The bracelets are produced and distributed by a nonprofit organization called Keep A Breast Foundation in California. The organization aims to increase awareness about the importance of breast cancer prevention among the youth.
School districts stand that it should be up to them to decide which languages are appropriate to use in school. For now, however, schools in Pennsylvania cannot stop students from wearing the “boobies” bracelet.

U.S. Presiden Barack Obama is expected to settle differences with Republicans on Wednesday to draw out a plan regarding the country’s growing debt and some saving options. Some of these saving alternatives are possible tax increase and trimming costs in a couple of government programs such as Medicare.
Officials said on Monday this week that Obama will set a new deficit-reduction goal that will potentially benefits the country in the long run. This is a huge contradiction to the plans of Republicans to cut at least $5 trillion in the next ten years.
Specific details of the said plan are still confidential but is expected to reach public knowledge during Obama’s speech, Wednesday. The speech will serve as a declaration of the president’s commitment to push his long-term budget principles.
After the president’s direct avoidance of issues regarding his planned cuts on very important programs for the old and poor, he is now expected to acknowledge budget cuts on Medicaid and Medicare. However, the White House said that Obama also aims to increase tax collection from the wealthy.
While Obama makes his speech Wednesday at George Washington University, the Congress prepares for a feisty fight to increase the country’s debt limit. Republicans will use this to take out more discipline from the president and the rest of the Democrats.
Many speculate that the president’s speech will confirm his stand that he will never cut costs on education, infrastructure, research, innovation, and energy. Whatever the outcome of Wednesday’s speech is, the White House wants to make sure that people understand that this recent debate on this year’s budget is not the same with the much needed talk on the nation’s debt.

The high way borders of New York beaches has become a disposal site for a possible serial killer, and might become the dumping ground of other killers too. To date, 10 bodies have already been found in the area and cops are saying that those people may not have been killed by the same person.
More bones were seen in Long Island beaches Monday and samples were already sent to the examiner’s office. There, they will determine whether or not the bones are from the same person or from more than one people.
Investigators, as well as Edward Mangano (Nassau County Executive), earlier said that a serial killer is responsible for all the bodies and/or bones found in Long Island’s popular public beaches. Now, however, the cops said that they cannot ultimately rule out the possibility of linking the bodies to more than one totally unrelated killing.
Authorities mentioned that they are currently probing any differences on how the murder was performed, body disposal or burial, and even DNA evidence. FBI agents and state police are jumping in the investigation; along with profiling experts and behavior science investigators.
After rigorous DNA testing, the persons behind the identified bodies seem to be from very different backgrounds. The first body found is of a prostitute who was advertised on Craiglist. One other body that was found in almost the same area also belongs to a sex worker who reportedly advertised on Craiglist too.
The succeeding corpses did not have anything to do with the two sex workers. One was a toddler, others were a mix of teens and adults of different sexes.

A judge in Utah ordered a convincted sex offender, facing nearly two dozen of charges against rape, child sexual assault and sodomy to be released from the state hospital because of his mental incompetency to go through trial.
Fourth district Judge James Taylor said he has no legal grounds for holding Lorrie Hyrum Johnson, 38, at a hearing on Thursday. He said the constitution prohibits him from holding a person who cannot defend themselves.
However, the mother of the the alleged victim said Johnson is only faking his mental illness to avoid trial.
Johnson has been diagnosed with a mental disorder. Doctors who assessed Johnson’s condition discovered that his mental competence could not be restored and said that he does not pose any danger to the society. They also said he does not qualify involuntary institutional commitment.
The prosecutors wanted the alleged sex offender to stay at the Utah State Hospital so he could defend himself from the complaints filed against him. However, they did not object the ruling of the judge.
21 sex assault charges were charged to him in 2007. Taylor deemed Johnson incompetent to stand trial on 2008. Under the law of Utah, the defendant fits that decision if he has or is undergoing mental illness.
A lot of professional people reacted against the verdict that he be set free. However, Taylor did not dismiss Johnson’s case. He ordered him to see new psychiatric evaluators in October. A hearing will be resumed on Nov. 17 to check with the recent psychiatric findings.

In Rio de Janeiro, a gunman wandered the hallways of an elementary school on Thursday and murdered a dozen children. It is reported that he lined up all 12 children and shot them point-blank in the head while shouting that he will kill them all.
It is by far the worst school shooting in Brazil. Reports say that it would have been more fatal and more bloodshed if the gunman was not shot in the legs by one of the police officers in the area. The gunman then fell down a flight of stairs and shot himself straight in the head.
A YouTube video circulated showing children running wild inside the school while desperately screaming for help. Many of those children wore blood-soaked uniforms.
The Secretariat of Health and Civil Defense of Rio de Janeiro said that about a dozen other students were injured and two of them are in grave condition. Officials later announced that a total of 18 children were injured by gunfire. Those who were killed by the incident were between ages 12 to 15.
Andreia Machado, mother of 13-year old Thayne who was shot three times, was crying when she said that she is not certain if her daughter will be able to walk again after her spine was hit and caused her to lose sensation on her legs. Thayne told her mother before she went to the operating room that the gunman just came in shooting.
The gunman was reported to be Wellington Oliveria, 23. No clear motive was discovered but reports said that Oliverio seemed to be infected with AIDS and wanted to kill himself. Why he took down all those children with him, remains to be a puzzle.

Hundreds of people went to southern New Jersey synagogue to bid their last farewell to New Jersey’s former Rep. John Adler; and to join his family in their grieving. Lt. Gov. Kim Guadagno, and Gov. Chris Christie were the dignitaries who attended the funeral service, Wednesday, in Cherry Hill.
John Adler, died Monday at the age of 51, as confirmed by one of his spokespeople. He had been staying in the University of Pennsylvania Hospital since last month after contracting an infection in the tissues surrounding his heart; or in medical terms, bacterial endocarditis. The congressman also underwent emergency surgery in the same hospital.
Adler grew up in a town in New Jersey. He went to Harvard and then proceeded to Harvard Law School. At 28, and as a young lawyer in New Jersey, he won as a councilor in Cherry Hill. In 1991, he became a State Senator. During that election, he was the only Democrat who defeated a Republican in New Jersey. He was re-elected five times while he continued to work as a lawyer.
In 2008, he decided to run for Congress and one won after Jim Saxton, long-time Republican representative, decided to retire. Two years later, Adler lost to a very popular Republican opponent, Jon Runyan.
John Adler left behind his wife Shelley, and four sons.

A man accused of kidnapping young Jaycee Lee Dugard in 1991 is expected to plead guilty on Thursday, a lawyer involved in the case said on Monday.
Phillip Garrido, 59-years-old, consented to plead guilty under the deal arranged with the prosecutors that will evade him and Jaycee of court trial. However, the plea will likely put him in jail for the rest of his life, said Steve Tapson, the attorney that represents Phillip’s wife and co-defendant.
However, Philip’s wife, Nancy Garrido, was still convinced to go through a trial despite her attorney’s efforts to negotiate her of plea deal that might somehow spare her from lifetime imprisonment. Prosecutors involved in the case refused to comment. The public defender chosen to represent the accused man could not be reached as well.
Phillip and Nancy Garrido are accused of kidnapping 11-year-old Dugard from a street near her home in South Lake Tahoe on June 10, 1991. They held her captive for 18 years in a private area behind Garrido’s house.
Dugard’s living quarters were covered with tents, tarpaulins and old car, which were often overlooked by police officers investigating the scene. During the time of her captivity, authorities said Dugard bore two daughters with Philip Garrido.
Their identity was kept secret until Garrido roused suspicion among the police while he tried to hold a special Christian gathering on a school campus. Dugard’s reappearance in 2009 made international headlines. She was then 29 years-old.
According to Tapson, the Garridos fully confessed to the El Dorado County authorities. The attorney wishes to give Nancy Garrido some mercy as she has no criminal records in the past and was only influenced by her husband at time the child was kidnapped.

President Barack Obama announced himself as a candidate for the next year’s re-election through video and mail sent to his supporters on Monday. He hopes economic recovery will increase his chances for a new term.
The announcement sets the plan to gather about $1 billion donations, which would break off the campaign finance record of $750 million he had previously acquired for the 2009 elections.
Obama appears to be in a fairly good shape against his potential challengers from the Republican field. However, many believe it is early to tell yet. The U.S economy is picking its pace to recovery. Yet, there are still various instances that could affect Obama’s chances, which include increasing prices of gasoline and unexpected extension of the conflict in Libya.
Also, the high unemployment rate in the United States became a huge factor in the victory of Republican field in November. Most Americans consider this factor when they vote. But the unemployment rate decreased to 8.8 percent in the last few months.
In 2009, Obama became the first ever black president in the United States. He scored big when reforms of healthcare, as well as financial regulation laws were approved by the Congress last year.
Obama’s fate in the 2012 re-election will highly depend on how he scores with the independent voters, which were an important part of his victory in 2008.
Although President Obama tries to distance himself from actions which can be viewed as ‘politicking,’ each of his moves will be viewed now as re-election plots by the media. In his email, Obama said to his supporters that he will be filing papers to begin his re-election bid in a formal way.

Prosecutors from Wisconsin filed a criminal complaint, Thursday, against Katherine R. Windels, 26. This is after she allegedly sent e-mails to Republican state senators after they submitted controls on the union rights of public employees.
Katherine Windels, who is from Cross Plains, Wisconsin, is facing a maximum penalty of three years in state prison, on each of her two counts of felony cases. Those cases were filed because she threatened to tear down properties with the use of explosives.
On top of that, Windels is also charged with two counts of misdemeanors with a penalty of imprisonment for at least 90 days each. These cases are due to her use of a computer to write messages which indicate threat to harm or injure people and/or properties. She is also facing fines of $22,000.
The complaint filed in Dane County Criminal Court pointed out that Windels sent two separate emails to all the 19 Republican senators within March 9 to 16. In her emails, she said that she will put a bullet to the senators’ heads after they approve bans on the collective bargaining of public employees.
She also said in her emails that she has planted bombs on the senators’ cars and homes, and even inside the capitol. She further warned the lawmakers to put their “things in order” because they and their family will be killed.
When Windels was asked by state prosecutors if she sent the emails, she said she did but is not certain why she said those words. When probed whether or not she is planning to push through with her threats, Windels deliberately answered “no.”
