Wal-Mart Plots Better Business

Wal-Mart fights back competitors by emphasizing low prices and adding back thousands of products in store. The company is also planning to expand into cities and neighborhoods where other people dare not to go.

Three years ago, Wal-Mart led several dollar stores for selection, convenience and price. However, it is now losing customers and revenue, including smarting because of some poor decisions.

Although Wal-Mart is not in danger of giving up its place as top of the retail food chain, several competitors have already begun chipping away some parts of its dominance.

According to the International Council of Shopping Centers, revenue at Wal-Mart stores, which are open at least a year, has decreased by an average 0.75 percent each quarter over the last year. But, revenue increased by an average of almost 1.7 percent at Target, 5.9 percent at Family Dollar and 8 percent at Costco.

Wal-Mart CEO Mike Duke said in an interview with The Associated Press that they are running a better business now since competitors brought them to raise their own game. Wal-Mart anticipates that the decline in revenue will stop when it releases results from its fourth quarter this month.

Not like other stores, Wal-Mart thrived in late 2007 when the US when into a reccession. Its primary customers from households bought even more. It became the only place where many people shopped.

The entire $27 billion revenue growth of Wal-Mart for the year ending in January 2009 came from larger demand for basic items such as foods, household goods and pharmacy. That year, shoppers spent almost a quarter more on basics.

The company is also completing a major renovation to address shoppers’ complaints that its stores were messy. It widened aisles, removed clutters, enhanced lighting and lowered shelves.

Sales on iPad Slow as Vendors Increase Stock on Android Tablets

The clash of tablets appears to be on the rage these recently. But, if new figures are any indication, it probably means they are still warming up.

Apple Inc, the undisputed company leader in the industry, has sold more than 14 million iPads as of December. But, market shares dropped in the third quarter of 2010 from 95 percent to 75 percent the succeeding quarter, according to the research firm Strategy Analytics.

During the same period, shipments of Android-powered tablets increased from 2.3 percent to 21.6 percent. However, those figures on market-shares represent shipments from manufacturers to vendors, and not the sales to end-users.

To sum it all, more than 17 million tablets were shipped in the entire world in 2010. More than half of them or 9.7 million were included in the holiday shopping season in the fourth quarter.

Durring the fourth quarter, there were 2.1 millions shipments for Android tablet while only 300,000 devices equipped with other operating systems were shipped.

But, sales for the Samsung Galaxy Tab, which is now the most popular tablet that runs Android operating system, were not as high as the company had hoped for, the Wall Street Journal noted.

Samsung’s Lee Young-hee said in an earnings call on Friday that there were two million Tabs shipped by the manufacturer in South Korea, but only “a small number” were bought by consumers.

Still, Apple’s financial reports showed a decrease on iPad’s success in the last quarter of 2010, CNN noted. There were still 525,000 iPads left unsold than in the preceding quarter.

Chanel’s Haute Couture Presents Timeless Collection

Timeless appears to be the perfect adjective to describe the newest haute couture collection by Chanel. It is considered as a significant exercise in pure aesthetics and a big statement about modern fashion LK.

The Haute Couture collection was presented in rue Cambon, central Paris last Tuesday morning. Even though the collection was inspired by Marie Laurencin and represented a popular painting composed by “feminist” artist Coco Chanel, it was considered timeless in a sense that it did not suggest any specific period.

The collection consists of clothes that shimmer with crystals, pearls and beads. Semi-transparent clothes also dazzled the audiences where the collection was shown.

The show started quietly with series of models wearing sequined leggings or jeans. The ankle portion has bunches of semi-precious stones, all worn with flat ballet slippers. On top of the jeans, Chanel’s creative director Karl Lagerfeld used sleek tunics and mid-length coats.

In the middle of the show, the Chanel atelier went into full gear with an outstanding series of outfits. The collection was made completely of embroidery. Fitted jackets made of woven crystals, pencil pants made with micro pearls or redingotes amusingly reflected the light.

Lagerfield said that embroidering a design on to a sleeve or lapel is tricky, but creating a whole jacket out of embroidery is extremely difficult. He said he drove the atelier mad.

For the final show, several models posed on a staircase with tall mirrors as a background. It was a replica of the same stairway where Mademoiselle Chanel used to silently observe her own runway shows.

New Beatles Memorabilia Museum Opens in Buenos Aires

Thousands of objects related to the “Fab Four” are inviting Beatles fans to a newly built museum in Buenos Aires. These items include a brick from The Cavern Club, an “authentic” Beatles wig, and a check for 11 pounds signed by Ringo Starr.

Rodolfo Vasquez, a 53 year-old accountant gave rise to this “Beatlemania” museum. He became a fan at an early age of ten when he acquired the “Rubber Soul” record. He said he fell in love with the Beatles because of their song “In my Life.”

Vasquez took all of the memorabilia that he could find about the most famous rock band in history. It was a serious obsession that got bigger until he made it into the Guinness World of Records as the person having the world’s largest collection in 2001.

Guinness recorded a total of 5,612 items kept in his home’s attic in Buenos Aires. Since then, his collection has grown to over 8,500 gadgets, records, games and puppets.

About 2,200 of these precious pieces are on the shelves in the Memorabilia museum that recently opened a month ago along Avenue Corrientes where several tourists go.

The storefront museum in Buenos Aires rise among other museums because of its complete number of pieces, delicately arranged in display cases and shelves on the walls. It consists of several objects that will suite anyone’s preferences.

Vasquez said the idea of the museum is to show his collection permanently and change the items on display with others every year. Otherwise, he said it would be all kept in the boxes and trunks without anyone being able to enjoy them.

Michael Jacksons Scents Launches on March 7

A French perfumer is set to launch fragrances for men and women in commemoration of Michael Jackson, thanks to two young autograph hunters who asked to borrow a pen in Las Vegas.

The fragrances were inspired by the plants that grow at the late King of Pop’s Neverland Ranch. Eau de parfums’ “Jackson’s Tribute” for men and “Jackson’s Legend” for women will be officially launched in United States on March 7.

Julian Rouas Paris manufactures own-brand and private-label fragrances. He formulated the Michael Jackson scents in just two weeks under a partnership agreement with the head of the Jackson family signed last month in California.

Chief executive Frank Rouas said that with Joe Jackson they are 50-50 partners in world sales, including television rights and advertising receipts. He also added that a part of the proceeds will be given to the charities preferred by Michael Jackson.

Franck Rouas is a one-time French tennis instructor to Hollywood stars. He recounted that one day when he was managing his company’s stall at a trade fair in Las Vegas, two autograph hunters asked to borrow his pen telling that the Jackson family was nearby.

Rouas instantly gave them not only his pen, but including two samples of Versailles, one of his firm’s own brands. He instructed the autograph hunters to give the perfumes to Janet Jackson.

After an hour, Rouas was invited to meet the Jackson family in a private salon. The Jacksons showed interest in his products, Rouas said. He then proposed different fragrances to the Jackson family.

Joseph Rubino said that after further negotiations, they settled on a fruity floral blend for women and a muskier version for men. He is the master perfumer who perfected both scents.

However, a spokesman for Michael Jackson’s side informed that the perfume business undertaking was a Joe Jackson deal, in which the estate was not in any way involved.

Verizon to sell iPhone on Feb. 10

Verizon Wireless announced on Tuesday that they will be selling their version of the iPhone 4 starting February 10 of this year. This gives iPhone buyers in the United States a different choice of carrier for the first time after three and a half years.

The iPhone has been sold exclusively by the wireless carrier AT&T Inc since it was released to the U.S market in 2007.  Many people were frustrated by this lack of network choice.

The launch event held on Tuesday finally ended the monopoly on Apple Inc’s iPhone. Many people are already excited to get this phone in their hands through the Verizon network.

Tim Cook can not even tell the number of times he has been asked by his colleagues about when the iPhone will work for the Verizon Wirelss, the Apple chief operating officer said on the Tuesday’s event.

For existing Verizon customers, the pre-orders for iPhone will start on February 3. The given price will be $200 or $300 along with a two-year contract. That is about the same price and concurrence as the iPhone through AT&T.

With wider domestic network coverage than AT&T, Verizon is thought to offer better features particularly for the older “3G” wireless broadband. The carrier covers several areas within the country that AT&T does not.

In addition, iPhone service by AT&T in big cities can be spotty most likely because of crowding in the network.

However, it is still unclear as to how many people will shift from AT&T to Verizon. Verizon did not mention anything about their iPhone’s service plan along with pricing on Tuesday.

AT&T has sold about 11.1 million iPhones in a period of nine months in 2010. Analysts are expecting Verizon to sell about 5 to 13 million iPhones this year.
